a sudden silence (for morton feldman)

by Brian Lee

in my life
a sudden silence
what do you change?
and now
why not change?
or if you listen
why not listen?

are you changed by listening?

what is time to fill with?
until it's over
now sense like smoke
rising but never risen

or if before you change
I find you
and you are you
and I am other

              like a storm ending
              and it is written
              like a world
and again
with barely any pressure on the string
as the first time
              again the first time
again as the first time
              a wound
a wound indicates

and now again
a sudden silence
worn paper thin
between us

or a silence containing
neither answers nor questions

like a storm ending
as if it had never

or cold and dry
like between friends who speak no longer
