Orlando Jacinto Garcia: September 1987
for piano

September 1987 was written in the fall of 1987 shortly after the death of Morton Feldman. Considering that he was one of my most important mentors, his somewhat sudden death was quite a shock and caused me considerable sadness and grief. Fortunately I discovered that the best way to overcome his loss was to compose several new works in his memory beginning with September 1987 and later For Morton and On the Eve of the Second Year Anniversary of Morton's Death. In the solo piano work, September 1987, I attempted to capture the subtleties of color and pacing so characteristic in Morty's piano music. Although there are no direct quotes in the piece, the general shape of his gestures were an inspiration for the work. September 1987 is an homage and tribute to Feldman's talent and vision as a composer.
