IN MEMORIAM: MORTON FELDMAN was written in 1988, in memory of the late American composer, who was both a teacher and friend. The work is scored for an ensemble which was a favorite combination of Feldman's: bass flute (and flute), piano and percussion (vibraphone, tubular bells and glockenspiel). In the piece I have tried to suggest, while not quoting from actual pieces, the beauty and elegance of Feldman's music. The work, in a single movement, opens with a melodic figure played by the bass flute, which forms the basis for the melodic material in all subsequent sections of the piece, somewhat in the manner of a cantus firmus. Similarly, the harmonic elements of the piece are derived to a large extent from the opening chords of the work.Anthony Genge (3/2000)
