Orlando Jacinto Garcia: September 2007 (Remembering Morty)
for piano and percussion duo

September 2007 (Remembering Morty) was written for Thierry Miroglio and Ancuza Aprodu, the virtuoso piano and percussion duo based in Paris. The work was premiered by the duo in March 2008 as part of a concert held in Arras, France. The title refers to the fact that September of 2007 marked 20 years after the passing of my mentor Morton Feldman. Not surprisingly during this time I found myself reflecting quite a bit on my experiences with Feldman and decided that I would write a work in his memory. When I discussed the possibility of such a work with the duo they were immediately interested and agreed to premiere the work. The work is intended to at most be a reminiscence of Feldman’s music and as such does not include any quotation or other similar references. Instead as with much of my work the slow evolution of material and counterpoint between timbre, register, density, and pacing are the basis for the music. September 2007 (Remembering Morty) was realized with the assistance of the SGAE in Spain.
