Howard Skempton: A Humming Song (1967)
for voice and piano


In a conversation with Kevin Volans recorded in Volans' book Summer Gardeners: Conversations with Composers (Durban: Newer Music Edition, 1985), Howard Skempton writes:

Humming Song I wrote as a direct result of hearing [Feldman's] Piano Three Hands. Especially in a performance by Cardew and the composer, and Cardew played the celeste for the third hand. It was wonderful. Humming Song developed from that because the pianist hums with the note, so there's an added colour. That's pure Feldman, except that the chords are not like Feldman.
