Warren Burt: 63 Whispers in Memoriam Morton Feldman (1989)
for Bb clarinet, percussion, viola, bass, piano

63 Whispers in Memoriam Morton Feldman was written originally for the Australian Felix Ensemble, Felix Werder, director, for a tour of Europe they were doing. Later it was performed a couple of other times, by other groups, including a performance at the Adelaide Arts Festival. It's a series of 63 very soft, sustained chords, which was written using a random pitch and instrument selection routine. It was written as a memorial to Morton Feldman, who influenced me greatly, both in his choice of sound types and durations, and also in his uncompromising sticking to his own kind of vision.
